Batteries

Recycle:
Batteries power many parts of our lives from our mobile phones all the way to our hybrid automobiles. Responsibly recycling these batteries saves natural resources and protects human health through reuse of reclaimed materials and by keeping heavy metals out of landfills and water supplies. See our Household Hazardous Waste page for more information.

Bicycles

Books

Recycle:
Paper is one of the most versatile and important materials used in homes, schools, offices and businesses throughout the world. In 2007, 56 percent of the paper used in the U.S. was recovered for recycling. That’s an average of 360 pounds of paper recovered for every person in the country. Because of this high recovery rate, the paper industry set a new goal of a 60 percent recovery rate by 2012.

Boxes

Recycle:
Two types of cardboard can be recycled: flat cardboard, which is typically used in cereal and shoe boxes, and corrugated cardboard, which has a ruffled layer between the two flat pieces of cardboard and is often used in packing boxes. Both can usually be recycled through your local curbside recycling program.

Carpet

Recycle:
You can recycle your carpet by using carpet to help insulate the attic; if the insulation is old, just cut carpet into strips to fit between beams. Lay the strips on top of insulation. If the carpet has an odor you can shampoo before using it. In the attic the carpet can stay all year around helping with heating and cooling.

Reuse:
Here is some way to reuse your carpet you can make a homemade cat scratching post by stapling old carpeting to a piece of plywood.Lay it over the garden wall and hose it down, then allow it to dry and reuse it in the kids clubhouse, the bathroom, or in the garage. You can also use them in the mud room, as door mats, or pet beds.

Christmas Trees

Recycle:
Feed the tree to your compost pile. No, you can’t just throw a whole Christmas tree onto a compost heap and watch it disintegrate in real time. What you first need to do is reduce the tree into compost-friendly shavings, which can be accomplished either by hand (if you have the time, and if the tree is fairly small) or with the aid of a shredder. You’ll still have to be patient, though, because it can take up to a year for a compost heap to digest a pile of wood chips.

Clocks

Clothing

Recycle:
Pass on clothes to other people like younger siblings, cousins, nieces, and nephews. You could also send clothing along for the children and grandchildren of friends and coworkers.Give away the clothes in good condition to your local Salvation Army or Goodwill center. The donations are tax deductible. Look for drop-off zones throughout your community.

Reuse:
Depending on the piece of clothing, cut it into strips or squares. You can then use these pieces as rags. If you are really attached to the clothes, cut a piece that looks the best and save it to make a blanket.

Computers

See our Electronics Recycling page for more information.

Collectibles

Concrete

Recycle:
Test and painted concrete for lead. Only concrete with latex-based paint from after 1978 is clean and recyclable. Contact a lead testing lab for guidelines and testing costs. Scrape the concrete with a sharp knife and place the sample in a sealable bag or container. Wash your hands afterwards. If test results indicate the concrete contains lead or lead paint, take it to a hazardous waste facility.Check that the concrete is free of debris. Determine if the concrete is suitable for projects. The concrete should look fairly smooth and somewhat flat on the bottom.

Reuse:
Reuse concrete chunks to make a wall, planter box, walkway or patio

Electronics and Computers

Recycle:
Recycle by donating personal and office electronics that still function. Local organizations that offer clothing and supplies to low-income families offer a socially responsible way to recycle your electronics. Ask for a slip from the receiving clerk that accounts for the estimated value of your donations.Sell your electronics to a second-hand store in your community as a way to earn some money from recycling. Video-game stores, record shops and other places that sell used products offer opportunities to cut the costs of new electronics. See our Electronics Recycling page for more information.

Reuse:
Get rid of all the information on your hard drive. Use a program specifically created to wipe your hard drive clean. This is an important step whether you plan on recycling or donating that old computer. See Resources section for programs.

Eyeglasses

Recycle:
Call (800) CLEANUP for a list of drop-off centers for your old eyeglasses. These centers are affiliated with a program called Give the Gift of Sight, which is sponsored by the Lions Club and LensCrafters.

Reuse:
According to the World Health Organization, approximately 25 percent of the world’s population needs eyeglasses. You can help a person in need by donating glasses you no longer use.

Furniture

Recycle:
Scrap it. Steel and aluminum furniture can be sold for scrap, and some plastic furniture can be melted down and reused. Little Tikes furniture, for example, is made of all recyclable plastic. Just put it out with your plastic milk jugs and it will be recycled into something new and exciting.

Reuse:
Sell it. List your furniture in the classifieds; sell it in a yard sale, or consign it. If it’s in good shape, it should be easy to convert that old furniture into cash. Donate it. Give your furniture to a thrift store, domestic abuse shelter or another non-profit of your choosing. Your donation will help others, and net you a tax deduction too.

G

Glass

Recycle:
Check with the county you live in by calling the department of public works to determine what type of glass to recycle and where. Rinse and recycle bottle glass of any color, including green, clear and amber through your curbside program if you have one. Most communities do not vary in the type of bottle glass they recycle unless it is a mixed color. Throw out anything ceramic, as it will contaminate the glass as it is being recycled.

Disposal:
Figure out what types of glass you no longer need. Food and beverage jars can be recycled by local communities. Window glass and mirrors can go to salvage stores or a community swap. Dispose of ceramic glassware, lighting or tubes by breaking them up and placing them with the regular garbage. Dispose of broken glass with careful handling and gloves. Wrap the glass in multiple layers of newspaper securely. Then place the newspaper wrapped glass in a plastic grocery bag if you have one. Tie the bag and dispose of with the household trash.

Injet & Laser Cartridges

Recycle:
Look at the instructions in the box of your new laser or ink jet cartridge to find out how to recycle your old one. Many companies will provide instructions, packaging materials and free postage if you wish to recycle your old cartridge, which is then refilled and used again. See our Electronics Recycling page for more information.

Repair:
Turn the printer around so you can see the back portion of the plastic cover. Flip the plastic tabs holding the rear cover in place and fold the cover down. The ink cartridge will be visible in its cartridge cradle. Flip open the plastic tab holding the cartridge in place and pull the cartridge out. Wet the cotton swabs with a bit of rubbing alcohol and flip the cartridge over so you can see its inkjets. Rub the jets with the moistened cotton swab to remove any clogs.

Jewelry/Watches

Recycle:
DONATE – Old jewelry that is in decent shape can be donated to one of your favorite charities. The Salvation Army, The Goodwill and other thrift stores will gladly take your old jewelry and give you a donation receipt so that you can right it off on your taxes. Note the original price that you paid for the jewelry on your receipt. Your tax account or attorney will know what percentage of the original price you are allowed to write off.
PAWN IT – Pawn shops will take your old gold jewelry and give you cash. A good rule of thumb is that they give you 10% of the original value. If you paid $1,000 for a diamond gold ring, the pawn shop would give you about $100 for it.

Repair:
Measure your old band. Find out the length in inches, and, more importantly, the width in millimeters at the ends that connect to the watch body. Leather watch bands may be measured in inches at the connecting points.Choose a new watch band that matches your measurements. You can choose between leather, plastic or metal. Metal bands come in standard links and the self-expanding type. Remove your old watch band. Many replacement band kits include a spring bar tool, a tiny bar that looks like a screwdriver with a wrench for a head. The purpose of this tool is to slide into the space on either side of the bar that connects the band to the watch. This spring bar telescopes out at either end to fit into holes on the watch body. Use the tool to compress the bar until it is short enough to pop out of the holes that hold it in place.

Leather Goods/Luggage

Reuse:
Choosing a project that suits the leather you have. Billfolds, Garments, Wallets and Watchbands are made with 2-4 ounce leather. Belts, Moccasins and Purses are make out of 6 to 9 Ounce leather. Thin leather stretches easily and is not suitable for projects, like a dog collar, that may be pulled or stretched. You can braid leather to give it strength or double layer it to build up thickness. You can use contact cement to hold it together after you rough up the finished side with sandpaper before gluing together. Cut thin leather with a pair of sharp scissors. If your leather is thicker use the utility knife with a straight edge. Before you begin putting your project together, it is important to determine if your going to sew, lace or rivet your project together. Finishing your project is easy with some household products. You can use leather dye to take out the scratches and dullness. Some shoe polish can buff up the finish . If it has dye in the wax it can be used to finish the edges. There are many leather finishing products on the market which you can explore when finalizing you project

M

Mattresses

Reuse:
If you are replacing your old mattress with a brand new one, ask the company you are buying your mattress from if they will remove the old mattress. Many companies offer this service free of charge with the purchase of a new mattress. They will remove the old mattress when they deliver the new one. Donate your old mattress to charity. There are plenty of places that may be willing to help remove your old mattress for the needy. Call local shelters, crisis centers or churches, they may be able to arrange to have someone come pick up the mattress for you. However some charities will not take used mattresses for sanitary reasons, so this may or may not work depending on their regulations.

Metals

Recycle:
To earn money by recycling metals, you need to know the things that when recycled can fetch you money. You should know that anything made up of metal has got some value. A metal wire, a can or a metal accessory collected from junk will surely fetch you some price. All these when collected together will help a person earn some decent sum of money. Click here for recycling locations nearby.

Reuse:
Save and clean and keep containers and lids.Large and small ones.Depending on what you are going to use them for, choose metal or plastic ones for different uses. Metal ones usually have sharp edges from cutting them open so don’t use these for kids. Both metal and plastic ones can be used for dry storage,(beans, pasta, mushrooms, dehydrated foods.) If you poke a hole on each side and tie a twine or whatever through it long enough to hang around your next, frees both your hands for berry picking, or whatever.
