Building Department
The Building Department serves as the point of intake/issuance for:
- Residential trade permits (Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical)
- Commercial trade permits (Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical)
- Building Permits
Ionia County enforces the following State of Michigan Construction Codes:
- 2021 Michigan Building Code (Commercial)
- 2021 Michigan Plumbing Code
- 2021 Michigan Mechanical Code
- 2023 National Electrical Code (Part 8 State Amendments)
- 2015 Michigan Residential Code
The city of Portland independently enforces all above noted codes. Effective January 11, 2010 the City of Ionia transferred administration and enforcement responsibilities of the building, mechanical, plumbing and electrical codes to Ionia County.
The Ionia County Board of Commissioners continues its relationship with Associated Government Services, Inc., (BUILDING INSPECTOR) which covers the aspects of:
- Permit application review as well as submitted plan review
- Responding to code (building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing) questions
- Conducting inspections
- Dealing with code enforcement issues
