The Sheriff’s Office Deputy Clerks are responsible for a variety of tasks. They are the primary point of contact for most citizens, as they need access to records such as reports, LiveScan prints for employment or licenses, pistol purchase permits, and local records checks.

Concealed Pistol Licences

Applications and instructions for obtaining a concealed pistol license can be obtained through the Ionia County Clerk’s Office at 100 Main Street, Ionia. Fingerprints are taken at the Sheriff’s Office by appointment. Please call 616.527.5737 to make your appointment.

How do I obtain a gun permit?
If you do not have a CPL, you need to go to a police agency with a valid up to date photo ID. If you pass the background, you will be issued a License to Purchase a gun that is valid for 30 days. Within 10 days after the purchase, the law enforcement portion of the permit must be returned to the police agency that issued it. If you have a valid CPL, you do not need a license to purchase. Instead, you would complete an RI-060 Firearm Sales Record. Within 10 days of the transaction, the law enforcement section of that RI-060 needs to be submitted to a law enforcement agency in the seller’s jurisdiction.

Permits are processed on a first-come, first-served basis at the front counter of the Sheriff’s Office, Monday – Friday 8:30am to 4:00pm except on holidays.

How do I register a handgun?
To register a handgun, if the transaction took place using Form RI-010 – License to Purchase a Firearm, within 10 days of the purchase, the seller must return the ‘Licensing Authority Copy’ of the License to Purchase a Firearm to the agency which issued the License to Purchase. If the transaction took place using Form RI-060 Firearm Sales Record, within 10 days of the purchase, the seller must return the ‘Police Department/Sheriff’s Office Copy’ to a law enforcement agency within the jurisdiction in which the seller is located. In order to correctly register firearms, it is important that the information supplied is complete, legible and correct and that all signatures have been completed. Note: Handguns are no longer to be brought into the Sheriff’s Office; Inspections are no longer required.

For those with a Concealed Pistol License (CPL), the procedure is slightly different. CPL holders may purchase a firearm using Form RI-060 Firearm Sales Record. Upon completion of the transaction, the seller must return the ‘Police Department/Sheriff’s Office Copy’ to a law enforcement agency within the jurisdiction in which the seller is located. In order to correctly register the firearm, it is important that the information supplied is legible and correct and that all signatures have been completed and that the CPL number has been included on the sales record.

I have inherited a gun. How do I register it?
To legally take possession of an inherited firearm, the procedure is the same as purchasing a firearm. CPL holders would complete an RI-060 Firearm Sales Record. The next of kin or executor of the estate must sign as the seller. The completed ‘Police Department/Sheriff’s Office Copy’ of the RI-060 Firearm Sales Record would then be submitted to a law enforcement agency within the jurisdiction in which the seller is located. Non-CPL holders would need to obtain a License to Purchase, which can be done at their local law enforcement agency.
