A diversion and prevention program for youth and their families

The Youth Service Bureau (YSB) has been in existence since 1977. This program was created for the youth of Ionia County and their families to provide a supportive agency aimed at diversion/prevention services. The casework staff hopes to help at-risk youth countywide become more successful in their home, school, and communities through goal-setting and face-to-face support services in all of their environments.

What is the Youth Service Bureau and our philosophy?
  • A free, confidential, and voluntary service to help keep youth out of the formal juvenile court system.
  • We encourage parent and child participation to help with problems the youth may be having.
  • It is the philosophy of the Youth Service Bureau that when a child is having a difficult time, the entire family becomes part of the solution. Therefore, YSB visits are conducted at school, the courthouse, and the family home, with the goal being to involve those that are around the youth to become more successful.
What youth are involved with YSB?

The Youth Service Bureau works with youth between the ages of 6 and 16 that reside in Ionia County. These youth cannot have pending involvement with the juvenile court yet and have shown negative behavior at home, school, or the community. Most referrals come from the school setting or parents who just need a place to turn. There are some referrals that are not appropriate for YSB involvement. However, every effort will be made to assist in finding an agency to HELP!

Where are we located?

The Youth Service Bureau is located at the Ionia County Courthouse in downtown Ionia. YSB offices are in the basement with check-ins being in the reception area of the Ionia County Juvenile Court.
